Dr. Jocelyne is to conduct an assessment of the KBTH radiology dept during August visit, submit report, and consider relocating to KBTH as a consultant soley focussed upon moving the dept forward with no other distractions of private practise, etc. Accomodation at KBTH would be provided. At the recent Ghanaian Surgeon and Physicians Conference, the main discussion was how to enhance Medical Education in Ghana. KBNF has began talks of offering regular health courses at the KBTH yearly and e-courses online using websites like Khan Academy. Dr. Caines, Chair of Research for example would do a video presentation of UTMB medical end of life readings and discussion and post them online to kick start e-course programs… Continue reading

Dr. Gladys Fodjour, KBTH ophthalmologist, will be visiting the Vancouver Hospital Eye Care Center (ECC) on a sponsored fellowship for a “cornea, uveitis and medical retina” by KBTH this month. This is in line with KBNF-KBTH emphasis on training medical staff to adequately deal with numerous eye-related health problems that persist in Ghana and surrounding regions… Continue reading

Rev. Prof. Seth Ayettey, KBTH Management Board Chair reports that “progress has been made in terms of including the Neuroscience project in the Phase 1B on the New Emergency and Clinical Specialties Centre project to be undertaken with funds from a loan provided by an Arabic funding consortium. Parliament will have to approve this first and then we shall go through the procurement process to select a Consultant. . . . The work done by Don and Kaien and Lynn [KBNF PMG] has been a major reference document of the Ministry of Health in discussions with business groups interested in the Korle Bu project and other health development projects.” Remaining phases of the Centre are currently in discussion with potential funding agents… Continue reading

The Ghana Physicians and Surgeons Foundation of North America [GPSF] are preparing a CME Conference for Accra, Ghana this August 1 – 5. KBNF Chair of Education and Training Dr. Jocelyne Lapointe along with KBNF neurosurgeon [Atlanta, Georgia] Dr. Paul King are planning committee members priortizing in development of the neurosurgery and neurology portion of the conference program. KBNF 14th container shipment to UBTH, Benin City, Nigeria has arrived in port. The container is being cleared by the clearing agent representing Dr. David Uvoh and UBTH. Pro-Health International is responsible for transportation of this container to Benin City.
Much appreciation is extended to Dell Marie Wergeland, Director of Compassionate Resource Warehouse and her team as they helped collect neurosurgery ward unit items listed by Dr. Udoh and his Head Sister Priscilla Uabor. Shirley Grimyachev, Director of Universal Aide Society, faithfully facilitates transportation of our containers and this container is no exception.

Richard Gyasi, Head of the Pathology Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital visited Vancouver for 6.5 weeks in October and November, enhancing his knowledge of brain pathology and investigative techniques at the Vancouver General Hospital. KBTH extends gratitude for the expert direction provided by neuropathologists Dr. Katerina Dorovini-Zis and Dr. Wayne Moore.
Professor Gyasi will be able to institute new procedures in studying the brains of Ghanaian individuals suspected of having died of neurological disorders, as well as bringing greater knowledge to the interpretation of microscopic slides of brain tumours. He now has a friendly “Vancouver connection” that he will be able to consult on his more complex cases.

Meetings from last year between the MNI and KBNF has led to ongoing Curricular development of Neuroscience Research and Neurology residence program led by Dr. Lisa Caines and Dr. Lapointe.
World renowned Neuroscientist Albert Aguayo has given his strong backing and assistance in identifying funding and other opportunities once the proposal with specific goals and a time-line is complete.
Dr. Richard Riopelle , Dean of Neurology and Neurosurgery also advised KBNF to align their initiatives with the World federation of Neurology (WFN) which will ultimately open up funding opportunities to support educational and clinical initiatives presented by the Korle-Bu Foundation.

Students from KBNC UBC will be providing hands on assistance to KBNF to help load a 40 foot container with medical supplies and equipments to be sent to Benin Hospital, Nigeria where six KBNF members worked last November. President of the club, Ash Shamsian, also plans to host more events on campus to fundraise for KBNF this academic year.
In a related development,because of the medical mission last November, the sole neurosurgeon at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital(Nigeria) has been able to create a bond with the neurosurgeons at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (Ghana), so that more people can be helped.

KBNC McGill, led by an undergraduate Psychology Student Hon Yan, is positioning itself to host major events during the school year to raise funds for KBNF after successful recruiting during activities night. Besides small events like the chocolate fountain and selling of bracelets, two main events will be held in November and March. World Mental Health day will be hosted in November to bring awareness to Mental health issues in Africa. As women are more affected by Neurological ailments, March will be the time to draw awareness to this and raise funds for KBNF during the International Women’s day.
