Prof. Seth Ayettey, KBTH Management Board Chair reports that “progress has been made in terms of including the Neuroscience project in the Phase 1B on the New Emergency and Clinical Specialties Centre project to be undertaken with funds from a loan provided by an Arabic funding consortium. Parliament will have to approve this first and then we shall go through the procurement process to select a Consultant. . . . The work done by Don and Kaien and Lynn [KBNF PMG] has been a major reference document of the Ministry of Health in discussions with business groups interested in the Korle Bu project and other health development projects.” Remaining phases of the Centre are currently in discussion with potential funding agents.

Much appreciation is extended to Dell Marie Wergeland, Director of Compassionate Resource Warehouse and her team as they helped collect neurosurgery ward unit items listed by Dr. Udoh and his Head Sister Priscilla Uabor. Shirley Grimyachev, Director of Universal Aide Society, faithfully facilitates transportation of our containers and this container is no exception.
David Uvoh shares: “May the Lord honour continually your faith and your labour of love, you and all our dear friends, who gave so mmuch away and ask nothing in return.”

Richard Gyasi, Head of the Pathology Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital visited Vancouver for 6.5 weeks in October and November, enhancing his knowledge of brain pathology and investigative techniques at the Vancouver General Hospital. KBTH extends gratitude for the expert direction provided by neuropathologists Dr. Katerina Dorovini-Zis and Dr. Wayne Moore.
Professor Gyasi will be able to institute new procedures in studying the brains of Ghanaian individuals suspected of having died of neurological disorders, as well as bringing greater knowledge to the interpretation of microscopic slides of brain tumours. He now has a friendly “Vancouver connection” that he will be able to consult on his more complex cases.
Professor Gyasi’s visit to Vancouver was made possible by Drs. Felix Durity and Jocelyne Lapointe who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful visit and by the support of his colleagues at KBTH and the University of Ghana. It is the expectation of the KBNF Education Committee that this type of educational experience can be replicated every year, helping to enhance Ghanaian and West African expertise in many neuroscience related disciplines.

World renowned Neuroscientist Albert Aguayo has given his strong backing and assistance in identifying funding and other opportunities once the proposal with specific goals and a time-line is complete.

Dr. Richard Riopelle , Dean of Neurology and Neurosurgery also advised KBNF to align their initiatives with the World federation of Neurology (WFN) which will ultimately open up funding opportunities to support educational and clinical initiatives presented by the Korle-Bu Foundation.

A group of researchers and administrators led by Dr. Elizabeth Kofron also reestablishment continued interest of the MNI and McGill University in supporting the research and educational endeavors of the University of Ghana and also centered on discussions regarding possible funding opportunities and strategies. Also faculty and administrators at the McGill University will assist with the training of Ghanaian graduate students in neuroscience, provide faculty consultants for program and laboratory development, provide faculty mentors for students, and allow faculty from the University of Ghana to visit the McGill University for the purpose of course and program development.
